OVERVIEW
United Therapeutics is undergoing one of the largest commercial expansions in its 30-year history, significantly growing its Advanced Lung Disease (ALD) sales force. This role focuses on Tyvaso, supporting patients with PH-ILD (Pulmonary Hypertension associated with Interstitial Lung Disease), with anticipated expansion into IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis).
  
This is not a traditional pharma sales role. It is a highly specialized, relationship-driven position requiring strong clinical acumen, deep territory knowledge, and the ability to navigate complex patient journeys and access dynamics.
  
THE REALITY OF THE ROLE
This role is built for reps who already know how to operate in a specialty/rare disease environment.
  
Success in this role depends heavily on:
- Existing relationships with pulmonologists in the territory
- Ability to gain access to difficult accounts
- Understanding referral patterns and local healthcare dynamics
- Navigating specialty pharmacy, reimbursement, and patient access challenges
- Working cross-functionally to move patients onto therapy
  
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own and manage a defined territory like a business
- Build and maintain relationships with pulmonologists and key accounts
- Educate healthcare providers on PH-ILD, IPF, and Tyvaso
- Execute strategic territory plans to drive adoption and access
- Navigate complex patient journeys involving diagnosis, referral, and reimbursement
- Partner with cross-functional teams to support patient access and outcomes
- Analyze territory data and adjust strategy accordingly
  
NON-NEGOTIABLE PROFILE
- Current or very recent pulmonology relationships in the exact territory
- Strong experience calling on pulmonologists (not adjacent specialties only)
- Proven ability to access and influence difficult accounts
- Stability in territory (not frequent moves or recent relocation without relationships)
  
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (ALD SPECIALIST)
- 6+ years of successful pharma or similar sales experience
- Experience selling to specialty physicians (pulmonologists, cardiologists, etc.)
- 2+ years in specialty pharma or biotech
- Experience in cardiovascular and/or pulmonary disease
- Strong territory management and relationship-building skills
  
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Rare disease or specialty product experience
- Experience with specialty pharmacy, buy-and-bill, or reimbursement
- Institutional or major teaching hospital experience
- Experience in PH-ILD or IPF
  
SENIOR ALD SPECIALIST (ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS)
- 8+ years pharma/specialty/biotech sales experience
- 4+ years specialty pharma experience
- 4+ years institutional / teaching center experience
- Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and high-level territory ownership
- Ability to operate independently in complex, high-stakes environments
  
COMPENSATION
  
ALD Specialist:
- Base: $140K–$160K
  
Senior ALD Specialist:
- Base: $155K–$180K
  
Additional Compensation:
- $88K annual incentive (uncapped, paid quarterly)
- Annual stock grant (~10% of base salary)
- Car allowance program (no fleet vehicle)TRAVEL & LOCATION
- Territory-based role (must live in the territory)
- 75–80% travel required
- Regular face-to-face physician interaction, conferences, and field work
  
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Someone who:
- Already knows the pulmonologists in their territory
- Understands how patients move through the system
- Can get access where others cannot
- Has operated in complex, specialty environments
- Brings both clinical credibility and execution ability
  
This is a high-impact role for someone who wants ownership, complexity, and meaningful work in a growing specialty space.
