Tax Manager - Novato, CA
We are hiring a Tax Manager for a highly respected public accounting and advisory firm with nearly 50 years of success serving closely held businesses, high net worth individuals, and nonprofit organizations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. This high visibility leadership role will partner closely with firm leadership and clients to oversee complex tax engagements, review tax returns, provide strategic advisory services, and mentor developing tax professionals. The Tax Manager will play a key role in maintaining strong client relationships, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance, supporting firm growth initiatives, and contributing to a collaborative and growth oriented environment.
Responsibilities
• Manage and oversee complex tax engagements for closely held businesses, high net worth individuals, and nonprofit organizations
• Review federal and multi state tax returns including partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, trusts, and individuals
• Provide proactive tax planning, consulting, and advisory services to clients
• Research complex tax issues and communicate findings and recommendations to clients and leadership
• Manage client relationships while serving as a trusted advisor and primary point of contact
• Lead, mentor, and develop tax staff and senior associates through coaching, training, and performance feedback
• Review workpapers, financial statements, and tax filings to ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations
• Assist with workflow management, project timelines, and engagement profitability
• Support business development initiatives and identify opportunities to expand client relationships and firm services
• Partner closely with firm leadership on operational initiatives, process improvements, and strategic planning
• Assist with tax notices, audits, and regulatory inquiries as needed
• Stay current on changing tax laws, regulations, and industry developments
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• Active CPA license required
• 6+ years of progressive public accounting tax experience
• Strong experience reviewing and managing complex tax returns and engagements
• Experience working with closely held businesses and high net worth individuals preferred
• Strong understanding of federal and multi state taxation
• Proven leadership experience supervising and mentoring staff
• Advanced Excel skills and experience with tax and accounting software systems
• Excellent communication, client service, organization, and problem solving skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines within a collaborative team environment
