Substation Engineer (Physical / P&C) - Remote
Location: Remote (U.S.)
Experience Level: 6-10+ years preferred (other levels considered)
Salary Range: $135,000-$155,000 (commensurate with experience)
About the Role
We are seeking a Substation Engineer to join a growing, modern engineering firm focused on delivering high-quality power delivery solutions. This is a fully remote position offering the opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping both technical execution and client relationships within a newer, expanding organization.
The ideal candidate brings strong substation physical design experience, with additional exposure to Protection & Control (P&C) design. This role will involve hands-on engineering, coordination across disciplines, and direct interaction with utility and developer clients.
Key Responsibilities
Substation Physical Design (Primary Focus):
- Lead and support substation physical design for transmission and distribution projects
- Develop layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding plans, conduit and cable trench layouts, foundations, and steel structures
- Perform calculations related to clearances, grounding, and equipment placement
- Prepare and review construction drawings, specifications, and material lists
- Coordinate physical design with P&C, civil/structural, and transmission line teams
- Support constructability reviews and respond to RFIs during construction
- Support P&C design efforts including one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts
- Coordinate relay protection philosophies with clients and internal teams
- Review P&C drawings for consistency with physical design and project standards
- Serve as a technical point of contact for clients on assigned projects
- Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and project check-ins
- Support project managers with scope definition, schedules, and technical input
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal design standards as the company grows
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- 6-10 years of substation engineering experience (other experience levels will be considered)
- Strong background in substation physical design
- Working knowledge of P&C systems and coordination
- Experience with utility or EPC substation projects
- Proficiency with AutoCAD (or similar design tools)
- Strong communication skills and comfort in client-facing environments
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Experience in a consulting environment
- Exposure to multiple utility standards and design philosophies
