Role Overview
We are seeking a senior leader to take charge of our Charlotte location and guide its continued expansion. This individual will oversee daily operations, provide direction to engineering and design teams, and serve as a key point of contact for clients when technical or project-related issues arise. Beyond operational management, this role includes promoting our engineering capabilities and building new relationships within the investor-owned, municipal, and electric cooperative utility sectors.
This position reports directly to the Business Unit General Manager and includes supervisory responsibilities.

Beyond operational management, this role includes promoting our engineering capabilities and building new relationships within the investor-owned, municipal, and electric cooperative utility sectors.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Management
- Lead and support engineering, design, and technical staff, ensuring strong performance, employee engagement, and professional growth.
- Handle recruiting, hiring, performance evaluations, workload oversight, scheduling, and mentorship for team members.
- Guide project execution efforts to ensure quality, timely delivery, and alignment with client expectations.
- Maintain and strengthen client relationships while pursuing new opportunities within the utility market.
- Review and validate project scopes, prepare cost estimates, and produce proposal materials.
- Develop technical specifications used for bidding—covering equipment, labor, protection/relaying, and related components.
- Stay informed about emerging technologies, market shifts, and commercial trends shaping the utility industry.
- Promote the company's full range of engineering offerings and support broader strategic initiatives.
- Engage in both sustaining existing customers and onboarding new ones to support growth of the office and business line.
- Provide professional leadership for project engineers, project managers, designers, and technicians.
- Manage accounts, nurture long-term partnerships, and resolve conflicts or project challenges.
- Conduct career development discussions and identify opportunities for learning and advancement.
- Monitor billable utilization, assess resource needs, and forecast staffing requirements based on workload.
- Facilitate communication between internal teams and other offices to ensure consistent coordination and resolution of design issues.
- Perform quality reviews of substation protection and control work, relay design, settings, and sealed construction packages.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Preferred: MBA, PMP, or a master's degree in Engineering Management.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required, with the ability to obtain additional state licensure as needed.
- 10+ years of experience involving substation engineering and protection/relaying work (preferred).
- At least 5 years in the engineering consulting industry.
- At least 5 years of experience supervising or managing personnel.
- Ability to develop strong professional networks and maintain long-term business relationships.
- Skilled at researching engineering/design challenges and identifying solutions.
- Comfortable learning new subject matter to support team expansion and business growth.
- Strong process-improvement mindset and commitment to operational excellence.
- Effective communicator, able to explain engineering concepts and lead diverse teams.
- Proficiency with design and engineering tools such as AutoCAD, CymTCC, SEL software, Omicron, and others.
- Capable of traveling up to approximately 10%.
- Experience supporting construction activities.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and familiarity with project management tools.
